A dermatoscope is a specialized handheld tool used by dermatologists and other healthcare professionals like our Mole Findr Melanographers to closely examine the skin, particularly moles, lesions, and other skin abnormalities.
It is designed to provide a magnified and illuminated view of the skin's surface, allowing for a more detailed and accurate assessment of skin conditions.
Dermatoscopes typically consist of a light source and a magnifying lens, which may be built into a single device or as separate components.
The light source helps illuminate the skin, and the magnifying lens allows the healthcare provider to examine the skin more closely.
This magnified view can reveal subtle features and patterns that are not visible to the naked eye, helping in the early detection of skin cancers, such as melanoma.
We check your skin from head to toe and we don’t want to miss any potential skin cancers, so you’ll need to get down to your underwear.
Relax, our Melanographers are experienced at helping you feel comfortable and will give you a gown to wear. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind!
Note: While we generally don’t check areas such as genitals, mouth and eyes, you should be aware that some types of melanoma can appear in some very unusual places, including areas that never see the sun.
We recommend asking your relevant health professional such as your GP, dermatologist, opthalmologist or dentist to check these areas at your next appointment — or sooner if you have any concerns.

A skin lesion is the technical name for a part of the skin (including moles) that has an abnormal growth or appearance compared to the skin around it.
Melanoma occurs when the pigment-producing cells that give colour to the skin become cancerous.
Symptoms might include a new, unusual growth or a change in an existing mole.
Melanomas can occur anywhere on the body.
Self detection is possible but not recommended.
It depends on the type of melanoma. For example, nodular melanoma grows rapidly over a matter of weeks, while a radial melanoma can slowly spread over the span of a decade.
Like a cavity, a melanoma may grow for years before producing any significant symptoms.
It is recommended to get full body skin checks every year or as directed by your GP, specialist or dermatologist recommendations.
Yes, the older you get the higher the chances of getting melanoma.
That’s why we recommend anyone aged 50 years and older has a professional full body skin check each year by a skin cancer expert.
Your Mole Findr records are stored on a secure central database and can be accessed if you move homes or visit another clinic.
